What I've done in the past few years

Hey guys,

So I thought I'd share with you what I've previously done over the last few years

2009

  • I left Uni not knowing what to do - I heard of Winchester Action on Climate Change in Hampshire and decided to apply for a role as a volunteer intern - I was successful and worked on adding news & events to the website, meeting other interns, and taking part in climate demonstration 'The Wave' in London
  • Got referred to a group called 'Eastleigh Transition Network' (ETNet) where I learnt about the concepts of the Transition movement - a community response to peak oil and climate change, where local people took action instead of waiting for governments to make the change.
2010
  • Got inspired to create my own Transition Town in the area I grew up - Chandlers Ford - got linked up with a girl who also wanted to do this - and we set up meetings & film screenings in the town to bring people together to take local action.
  • Made good links with the Parish Council who offered to help the Transition Chandlers Ford group
  • In the meantime, helped out at events with ETNet and sat on the steering group as a representative for Transition Chandlers Ford.
2011
  • Helped ETNet by making connections with local people to run sustainability workshops, which included How to Make a Nest for Solitary Bees, Fungal Foraging, and Natural Christmas Wreath Making
  • Applied and won £300 grant from O2 Think Big to push Transition Chandlers Ford - included presentation, workshops, & gardenshare scheme.
  • Helped out at various local events for ETNet
  • Worked on a new website project with friends for ETNet along with developing social media for the group & creating a monthly e-newsletter.
  • Made links and connections with local people, groups & businesses such as Urbane Forager, Slow Food Solent, Southampton Scrapstore, Friends of Hocombe Mead & Bay Leaves Larder.
  • Also made links with World Development Movement on a lobby event for MP Chris Huhne.
  • Became a volunteer for free book shop in Southampton - Books for Free
  • Helped set up a free book shop in Eastleigh - Books for Free
  • Became a regular volunteer helper for a local community garden in Southampton
  • Started joining Transition Southampton as had moved there
2012
  • Helped with Transition Southampton Eat Local campaign on mapping food producers & retailers in Southampton
  • Put together a Southampton Sustainability Directory linking all environmental groups & businesses
  • Got involved with Transition Southampton Food, Transport & Steering Group
  • Made local connections and organised a Flash from Trash upcycling workshop and Jam & Chutney Making workshop for Transition Southampton
  • Learnt about freeganism and food waste & dumpster diving, and joined Food Not Bombs Southampton
  • Took over as coordinator as Southampton & Eastleigh Friends of the Earth
  • Booked stalls at summer events for Friends of the Earth promoting The Bee Cause campaign
  • Made local connections and organised a Bee Walk for Friends of the Earth
  • Made more local connections and organised, in partnership with a local knitter, a summer bee celebration fete with lots of organisations and groups running activities on everything bee related
  • Moved to Oakham in Rutland in East Midlands, and joined Transition Rutland & Rutland Friends of the Earth
  • Became a local catalyst for UK Youth Climate Coalition - making change in my local area
  • Networked with other local catalysts on weekly/fortnightly Skype calls
  • Started a Skype call with people interested in reaching out into schools
  • Went along to the Transition Network conference special event about a Youth Transition Network and started discussions in pushing this forward
  • Went to the Friends of the Earth conference and joined the steering group for new group Young Friends of the Earth - a group to unite & mobilise young people in taking climate action
  • Approached local plastics company in Oakham to use their empty troughs to use as a community vegetable growing space - and succeeded!
